Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup shirts to be auctioned; expected to sell for more than $10m

Sotheby's, the New York auction house, has confirmed the auction of six match-worn jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's historic 2022 World Cup campaign. The collection, valued at over $10 million, includes jerseys from key matches, such as the final against France, and will be available for purchase as a set from November 30 to December 14. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, benefiting children with rare diseases. Messi announced the auction on his Instagram, inviting bids and emphasizing the charitable cause.

The auction is expected to be a historic event in sports memorabilia, potentially surpassing the current record of $10.091 million paid for Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey. Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter, highlighted the collection's significance, noting its connection to Messi's remarkable World Cup journey and his status as one of the greatest players of all time. The public can view the jerseys for free at Sotheby's in New York during the auction period, offering fans and collectors a unique connection to Messi's extraordinary achievement in redefining football excellence.
